Web governance and organisation, intranets, social media and trends were the main topics at H&H’s ‘Web Management Round Table’, a gathering of invited website owners and managers from companies with bold websites.
Being responsible for a company’s websites and intranet, you are faced with many challenges everyday. And it isn’t always easy to receive assistance within your own organisation. We frequently meet these people and therefore decided to bring some of them together to initiate a discussion on what is on their minds.
The management and handling of web governance is an issue that constantly returns in most organisations. Who is the main person responsible for the company’s external websites or intranet? Can the ownership be delegated – what happens if it is, and what happens if it isn’t?
The companies which participated in the Web Management Round Table apply different solutions however have mainly decentralised organisations for maintaining and developing their websites. Another recurring subject was how to create commitment, engagement and most of all time. A number of activities were discussed which had been tested without any greater result. In summary the result showed that the company’s culture and management was a contributing factor.
When discussing social media and web 2.0 the general impression is that it is more widely accepted and used on intranets than on external websites. Personalised intranets, wikis and blogs are examples of features used today.
In regards to online presence outside of the own website, most companies are well aware of where they are visible, for example Wikipedia, groups on Facebook and blogs. Yet only a few companies have a strategy for how to handle issues that might arise.
Other interesting subjects were web analysis and statistics, cost sharing and internal search. These and other topics will be raised and discussed in upcoming meetings of ‘Web Management Round Table’.
