Anders Borg, Man of the Year in Economics in Sweden

Tuesday, June 16, 2009

The financial crisis has made its mark and the ripples can be seen in the top ranked profiles in this year's Financial Analyst and Journalist Ranking.

Minister of Finance Anders Borg is ranked first, recieving votes from 75 per cent of the electors. He dominated the scene already last year with half of the respondents mentioning his name.

The financial crisis is also evident in the elected profiles on second and third place. Bo Lundgren, Head of the National Debt Office, had his revival. 15 years ago he was responsible for solving the Swedish financial and real estate crisis, as Minister of Financial Markets. Stefan Ingves, now Governor of Sveriges Riksbank, at the time was the Head of the agency for supporting the banks. Now both have travelled to the US, telling officials of the Swedish experience! As one respondent says: “Bo Lundgren is the man that came out from his snail shell and dealt with the financial crisis in great honour”.

The Financial Crisis and the collapse of Lehman Brothers were voted as the most important economic events during the last twelve months, from the Summer of 2008 to June 2009. Barack Obama winning the Presidential election completed the international and American dominance of events this year.

The suite of scandals in Carnegie was the dominant national event last year, and the Government's takeover was rated heavier than Swedbanks and other Swedish banks troubles in the Baltic states.
